lThe Kentucky football program is mourning the loss of one of its own.
On Monday, the Wildcats announced that defensive lineman Nicholas “Nic” Smith passed away at the age of 20. Smith, a redshirt freshman from Loganville, Georgia, was entering his second season with the program after joining Kentucky as part of its 2025 recruiting class.
According to university officials, Smith was found Monday morning at a campus residence hall. Authorities stated that there were no immediate indications of foul play, though the investigation remains ongoing.
The loss has sent shockwaves throughout the Kentucky football community, with teammates, coaches, and fans grieving the passing of a young athlete whose impact extended far beyond the football field.
Kentucky head coach Will Stein expressed the program’s grief in a statement released by the university.
“Today our hearts are broken. Our thoughts and prayers are with Nic’s family, friends, teammates and everyone who knew and loved him.”
Known affectionately as “Happy” and “Big Happ” among teammates and friends, Smith was regarded as a positive presence within the Wildcats’ locker room. Though his college football journey was still in its early stages, those around the program remembered him for his energy, personality, and the relationships he built during his time in Lexington.
